Economic Relief on the Fourth

CLEAR LAKE, IA-Kevin Cortright is using this holiday weekend to get some much needed family time. He said there's no place better than Clear Lake.

"We don't get together that often but this is a pretty special place for them always had good memories of Clear Lake and the Fourth," said Cortright.

Cortright said everyone is being impacted by the economy. He said his family is trying to do their best to watch how much they spend. He said this weekend, it's surprisingly easy.

"You can really economize here but celebrate the freedom," said Cortright.

Although the economy is a factor, many Clear Lake businesses said they're not seeing a slump in sales.

"The week has really been busy. We started out Monday, very busy and progressed," said Cortright.

Recent reports suggest more than half of all families nationwide will be staying close to home this Fourth of July. That's good news for a couple of new downtown Clear Lake business owners. Becky Frieden said she's already felt the slowdown once this year.

"I lost my job the begining of the year," said Cortright.

Over the Fourth of July, the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce is hoping to pump nearly ten million dollars into the local economy. One business manager believes big ticket recreational items are also included in the prediction.

"Boat sales picked up nicely as weather warms up people kind of realize they need to be on the water," said Jesse Olson, Clear Lake Boats manager.

Cortright is glad to hear local businesses are thriving this weekend. He believes many people are taking a break from their worries.

"They may have to be on work on Monday but this weekend they're going to celebrate," said Cortright.
