CHARLES CITY, IA--
Charles City wants its 4th of July fireworks display to be memorable.
“People come from all around to see this-- this is about as good a show as you can find anywhere,” said City Administrator Tom Brownlow.
But not like they were last year.
“We had that giant whoosh of air as the projectiles went the other direction and that was pretty unusual,” said Brownlow.
Even spectators who weren't right up close knew something was wrong.
“There was a low flash and I though okay and then another fireworks went up and then a lot of light and a lot of noise and a lot of confusion,” said Carrie Bahlmann.
They want to make sure it doesn't happen again.
So when the old downtown location was bought by Kwik Star, they looked for a more remote place to launch this year's show.
“We have chosen a site that is more remote the crowd will not be within the area,” said Fire Chief Roy Schwickerath.
And they'll continue taking their usual precautions....
“We always have a truck and a fire crew at all of our fire works shoots,” said Schwickerath.
And they all hope last year's accident isn't preventing people from returning this year
“Those guys work really hard putting together a really great program for Charles City so I really hope everybody comes back out to see it,” said Bahlmann.
