ALBERT LEA, MN-Arson is suspected in an overnight fire at an Albert Lea elementary school.
Law enforcement is still looking for the person or people responsible.
Books are being hung out to dry and fans are blasting to rid the air of smoke left by a fire in a Lakeview Elementary classroom.
But authorities believe this mess is not the result of a freak accident.
Superintendent Mike Funk said, "it looked like somebody had broke a window, come into a classroom and set something on fire fortunately we had a sprinkler system in the room, a couple of the sprinkle heads went off and put out the fire."
But while doing that, it also left a couple inches of standing water in this fourth grade room....causing the school to close for the day
What's not being postponed is the investigation into the reason behind the arson, and what those in the community plan to do about it
Funk said, "they seemed to have gotten away with it by this point so I would say increase vigilance on the part of everybody around schools so to make people aware that this happened and we don't want to see it happen again."
Right now, there is no estimate on the amount of damage in the room, but one thing is for sure.
"kids are upset, little kids, elementary students think why would somebody come in and start a fire in my classroom and what's up with that. Whoever did it out there you really had an negative impact on the lives of school kids here in Albert Lea," said Funk.
Superintendent Funk said student will be returning to classes Monday.
He adds the room with the fire damage will not quite be ready, but they will have a place to go for the time being.
