MASON CITY, IA - It's been a while since Mason City has had a major snowfall, but the city's alternate side parking law is still in effect.

City Administrator Brent Trout says the reason is safety. A heavy amount of snow currently piled up on the curb is narrowing some of Mason City’s streets. That makes it difficult for cars and emergency vehicles to get through when cars are parked on both sides.

"When i have discussions with the fire chief and he says that it's really tight in the neighborhoods I have to respect that and I have to make sure they have the access they need to get in there and fight a fire," said Trout.

Alternate side parking has been in effect since at least the first of the year. Trout says if some of the snow starts to melt he'll lift the restriction.
