WORTH COUNTY, IA - Drivers coming into Iowa are running into something a little unexpected.
Fourteen Iowa law enforcement agencies are teaming up for a vehicle safety inspection check point on Interstate 35.
Commercial drivers and regular motorists alike are getting stopped. The inspections started around 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Iowa State Patrol, county sheriff's offices and even Immigration Customs Enforcement were all on hand.
Officers say their mission is to check vehicles to make sure lights, breaks and other equipment is working property. They're also be checking drivers' licenses, registration plates, and insurance cards.
"So far most of the people have been compliant and have had everything with them; of course as usual when we do these projects we're going to have the occasional violator and should we see something illegal we'll address it," said Sgt. Kevin Knebel, Iowa State Patrol.
Knebel says the last time a checkpoint was organized in north Iowa they had about 1,000 vehicles go through. He says it's not a way to get more people in trouble, just to make sure the roadways are as safe as possible.
Common arrests include drunk drivers or people carrying drugs.
