MASON CITY, IA - A local sheriff's office is looking for your help to pay for their new K-9 unit.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office wants to buy a K-9 unit dog. But it costs about $12 thousand to purchase and train the animal.

The department got the idea after one of the deputies did a ride-along with the Hancock County K-9 unit. Deputy Brett Wilson says there are a lot of benefits to having a dog.

"The Hancock County dog has made nearly $300,000 in forfeits and seizures, so it’s paid for itself. The initial investment is a little steep, but it pays for itself in the long run."

Wilson would be the deputy working with the dog. He explains the K-9 unit will help with everything from drug searches, to protecting deputies in the line of duty.
