MASON CITY, IA - Folks usually associate flowers and chocolates with romance, but health officials say there is nothing romantic about getting a cold, or the flu over Valentine’s Day.
Normal peak flu season is January or February. We may be having a mild season this year, but Karen Crimmings with the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health says things like the flu can be transferred through saliva. So, if you’re not feeling well, maybe stay away from smooching your valentine.
"Spend time on a different day, because you really don't want to give other people your illness especially your loved ones. So if you’re not feeling well, celebrate it another day."
Or if you feel the need to do some smooching, a couple people say on the cheek is just fine. Keep in mind flower stores are open all year round.
