MASON CITY, IA - More shoppers are breaking out the plastic this holiday season. But as that bill gets bigger how do you keep yourself from getting into debt?

Local experts say the most important thing you can do is don't get caught up in the frenzy. Shoppers on Black Friday used their credit card nearly 8 percent more this year, than they did last year.

Paula Zimmerman, the Asst. Vice President Clear Lake Bank and Trust says, "I think they may have less disposable income and they're concerned about paying the bills and what the future may bring. They may not have that money available to them right now."

Zimmerman also explains if someone is experiencing layoffs or cutbacks in the home it’s good to communicate expectations for things like presents.
