MASON CITY, IA - For moms, like Tammy Simmers Facebook is a great way to check up on the kids, and make sure they're not involved in any risky behavior.
She says she would take action if she ever found pics or status updates signaling her kids have a problem with drugs or alcohol.
"There’s a serious problem and it needs addressing, especially those situations."
But Jay Pedelty a Prevention Specialist at Prairie Ridge-Addictions says, don't jump to conclusions too soon. Those party pictures could be misleading.
"If I’m over 21 and I have alcohol in my hand, just the picture itself doesn't suggest I’ve been drinking. Maybe I was cleaning up."
Recent studies show young adults who Facebook about their intoxication are six times more likely to receive an alcohol related injury from a fight or accident.
Pedelty even argues being on Facebook makes alcoholism seem normal.
"If I belong to any group that condones or encourages or normalizes high risk alcohol use, than that is an influence that puts me more at risk."
But he explains that when behavior is out there online, it is possible others will see it and take action.
As for Tammy, whether it's her kids or even her friends, she'll look out for them on Facebook.
"I would talk to them about it and ask them how things are going and if they need to talk about anything."
