A promising new cancer treatment is getting a lot of attention.
It uses electricity to poke lethal holes in tumors.
Doctors are able to kill the cancer tumors using the so-called Nanoknife technology and probes, that almost look like long toothpicks.
Using guided imagery, surgeons insert the probes through the skin to the exact area.
Once in place, they create an electrical field that pokes permanent, microscopic holes in tumor cell membranes.
Rahuldev Bhalla, M.D., a Urologic Oncologist says, "The cell membrane is the barrier or the façade of the cell. Once you put holes in the cell membrane, it's like putting holes in your windows. You're letting everything in and out."
Including the cancer cell's nutrients.
Once they leak out, the cell starves to death within seconds.
Because the technique doesn't use extreme heat or cold, there's no damage to nearby healthy tissue, nerves or blood vessels.
