  New study finds Multiple Sclerosis may start in the brain's outer layers and progress into the deeper part of the brain, rather than the other way around.

  The traditional understanding was that the disease began in the white matter and extended to the cortex, but doctors from the Mayo and Cleveland Clinics found that the cortex may be the initial target of the autoimmune disease.

  The new findings may lead to new treatments.
