ROCHESTER, MN - Thousands of people undergo hip replacement surgery each year to get rid of arthritis pain.
Most of the time the surgery is successful, and the patient walks away pain-free.
Sometimes, years later the pain can return when the replacement joints re-loosen.
Doctors at Mayo Clinic say they have ways to fix this problem.
Now surgeons can put in what's called uncemented technology.
This means the new joint is designed to grow into the bone without using any cement.
New technology is making that happen though less often.
"So most of the, once they grow into the bone are not particularly likely to loosen up, having said that, many of the implants of the past used cement. Bone cement can gradually loosen," says Daniel Berry, M.D., Mayo Clinic.
