ALBERT LEA, MN--They've now become very popular hair smoothing treatments, but the Minnesota Department of Health is warning the salon chemicals may be dangerous.
Formaldehyde is found in many new chemical smoothers, known as "Brazilian Blowouts" and "Keratin Taming Systems". But there are non-formaldehyde options.
The chemical can pose a health hazard if workers or customers are exposed either with contact or air exposure. It could mean eye and nose irritation, severe reactions from asthma sufferers, and an increased risk for some cancers.
Salon 22 in Albert Lea says they choose non-formaldehyde formulas for a reason. Owner Carrie Hershey says, "We're worried about our customers too, we don't want them to be exposed to anything that's not healthy or good for you."
Hershey says in hair smoothing treatments or nail fillers, they only choose non-formaldehyde products.
MDH warns that even though some products are labeled "formaldehyde-free" their tests still found some chemical in the air.
These products aren't illegal for salons to use, but officials hope both workers and clients are protected and they're being used in well-ventilated areas.
