Type 2 diabetics are encouraged to exercise but how much and what kind should you do?
Researchers are trying to narrow it down.
Patients are enrolled in the HART-D study.
It's focus is to determine the best exercise prescription for diabetics.
Study participants were randomly assigned to aerobics only, weight lifting only, or a combination.
Also, muscle biopsies will help determine which exercise boosts glucose burning.
Exercise Researcher, Tim Church, M.D., Ph.D. says, "If you keep skeletal muscle happy, it's chewing up more blood sugar. You know, we've always thought, well okay, walking is going to make it happy, but weight lifting might make you make more skeletal muscle."
The "HART-D Study" is in the 'data review' stage now, and will publish results once that part is completed.
