As many people think ahead to the Super Bowl this weekend, a former Chicago Bears linebacker joins other athletes to team up in an effort to educate parents and coaches about concussions and blows to the head.
Hunter Hillenmeyer played eight years in the NFL.
Numerous concussions ended his career early.
Now he wants others to know that multiple concussions could lead to a previously ignored brain condition called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE.
A disease diagnosed by pathologist.
"That's why I'm working with pathologists to try and help educate players, coaches, educators, and parents about having a better understanding of what a concussion is and what to do to protect people from them," says Hillmeyer.
In some cases the warning signs may not appear until hours or days later, but the effects can linger later in life.
