MASON CITY, IA--Mary Harms is a teacher with more than 20 years on her resume.
"I love working with the kids," she said.
The family and consumer science teacher is marking four years now at Newman Catholic High School.
"You're supposed to find a job that you don't have to work a day in your life," said Harms. "And this one is definitely work but it is true fun."
The enthusiasm she brings to the classroom is why she's this week's golden apple award winner.
"I think she's very deserving because she's such a good teacher and she helps you learn a lot," said Newman senior Jace Timpe.
And Harms is flattered by her students' appreciation.
"It's really unique when a high school student nominates a teacher," said Harms. "It's one of those things--we have different relationships in high school and to have young adults acknowledge that is just wonderful."
She works hard at developing that teacher-student relationship.
"I think she relates well with the students," said Newman administrator Tony Adams. "A lot of hands-on activities, very organized, well prepared for her class."
And she's excited to share her success with her students.
"I'm going to cherish this because it really does mean a lot," she said.
